The Process
What This Looks Like in Practice
This work moves through a slow, intentional rhythm designed to help your dog feel safe enough to learn again. We don’t jump into drills or try to correct behavior from the outside. Instead, we begin by observing — really observing — what your dog’s body is communicating: their breathing, their posture, their patterns, the way they take in the world. From there, we make small, supportive adjustments that build predictability and trust, allowing the nervous system to settle. As we move through each phase thoughtfully, your dog gains the capacity to regulate, recover, and handle more of life without tipping into overwhelm. This is what creates lasting change. The big behaviors don’t get “fixed” — they simply lose their purpose. They soften, then fade, because your dog no longer needs them to cope. The process is gentle, relational, and deeply stabilizing, giving both you and your dog a clear, grounded path forward.
What a Session Feels Like
My work is designed to support your dog’s nervous system with as little pressure as possible. That’s why I stay out of the home environment — when a new person enters the space, dogs shift their behavior, track the visitor, and often mask the very patterns we need to understand. By not being physically present, I’m able to read your dog far more accurately through your observations. Our work centers around daily reports. Each day, you send a brief update about what you’re seeing — the softening, the tension points, the patterns emerging. I review your report and send back a clear assessment of what’s happening and why, along with any adjustments needed to keep things moving in the right direction. You have ongoing access to me whenever something feels unclear or unexpected. We move through this work together, making thoughtful adjustments that honor your dog’s nervous system and create lasting change.
How Change Begins to Take Shape
As dogs move through the phases of this work, their nervous system begins to stabilize in a way that creates real, lasting change. Early on, you’ll see small shifts — a softer body, a deeper breath, a moment of curiosity where there used to be tension. As we progress through each phase thoughtfully, the dog’s system learns how to downshift, recover, and regulate without getting stuck in survival patterns. This is where the big behaviors begin to melt away, not because we “fixed” them, but because the dog no longer needs them. Reactivity softens, shutdown loosens, transitions become smoother, and communication becomes clearer. Over time, families notice a dog who can handle more of the world with confidence and flexibility, and a relationship that feels steadier, more attuned, and far less overwhelming. The change is not temporary — it’s the natural outcome of a regulated, supported nervous system.
Start Here
If you’re new to this work, the first step is simply getting oriented. Begin by reading about the Beneath the Behavior™ approach to understand why regulation comes first. From there, you can schedule a free 30‑minute call where we talk through your dog’s needs and whether this work feels like a good fit. When you’re ready, we’ll move into an Comprehensive Assessment and create a plan that supports both you and your dog.
Your Dog’s Nervous System
Every behavior your dog shows — from reactivity to shutdown to restlessness — begins in the nervous system. When the body feels unsafe or overwhelmed, behavior becomes louder. When the body feels supported and predictable, behavior softens. Understanding your dog’s nervous system gives us a clear, compassionate map for what they need, what they’re capable of in each moment, and how to help them return to a regulated state.
Beneath the Behavior™
We combine a thoughtful, human-centered approach with clear communication and reliable results. It’s not just what we do—it’s how we do it that sets us apart. This method is built on the belief that behavior is communication, not defiance. Beneath every bark, freeze, lunge, or retreat is a nervous system doing its best to cope. By looking beneath the surface, we uncover the real story — the patterns, pressures, and unmet needs driving the behavior. From there, we create a path forward that honors your dog’s emotional world and strengthens your relationship in a sustainable, humane way.
